Bright Space at HMP Brixton Opens!

October 2, 2017

The Bright Horizons Foundation for Children officially opened a new Bright Space at Brixton Prison on September 22nd.

The Bright Space is located in the children’s area of the family room at the prison, and provides a welcoming and child-friendly environment in which children can relax, play and build relationships with their families.

Abby Sloan, HMP Brixton’s Head of Operations and Children’s and Family Pathway Lead, says, “We are extremely grateful for the support of the Foundation and the incredible space  they have created for us. We are working hard to improve our family services and the family link room is an amazing resource for us to be able to offer to the men and their families and I’ve no doubt it will bring about positive experiences and outcomes for them.”

Tracy Wilkes-Green, the Foundation’s Bright Space Manager says, “We are delighted to open our Bright Space for Brixton Prison. The children of imprisoned parents are among the most vulnerable in our society, and our Bright Space provides a place for them to have fun and enjoy play, whilst spending time with their male family members. In addition, offenders are 39% less likely to re-offend on release if they maintain their family ties when in prison, and our Bright Space will facilitate this.”
